    uScreen Wins at the AMI Awards

    The winners of The Ability Media International Award (AMI) have been announced and uScreen has won in the Interactive Media category. We’ve been working with Screen South over the past couple of years and needless to say we’re over the moon that uScreen has received this award. Winners are chosen for their creative excellence and social relevance. Here’s what AMI says about uScreen:
    This innovative new project led by Screen South, particularly tailored to disabled young peoples’ needs, assists 14-21 year olds to show and develop films and to collaborate online. Specially created tools allow users to make and edit films and learn new skills, receive expert mentoring, meet new friends and make contacts with film-makers and specialists across the region. It provides opportunities, bursaries, live workshops, celebrations and international exchanges.

    iOS Tech talk

    I went to iOS Tech Talk in London the other week and had the chance to listen to some inspirational talks and also learn some new tricks. So i was very excited to get a call to do a prototype for a new startup. This client is really thinking differently and I needed to use rapid prototyping techniques.

    I’ve found it exhilarating how easy iOS5 makes prototyping. Storyboards, ARC, Core Image, PageViewControllers, Twitter integration came to good use . Very excited for what’s lying ahead.

    ‘High Tech Tea’ with the Dutch Prime Minister

    We often receive some strange phone calls over at milo HQ but I was taken by complete surprise when I was invited to an afternoon ‘High Tech Tea’ with the Dutch Prime Minsiter Mark Rutte and Eric van der Kleij (CEO of Tech City) to discuss opportunities for collaboration between creative companies in London’s Tech City and Holland.

    It will be interesting to see how London’s Technology Cluster will develop over the coming year and whether it can loose the rather belittling ‘Silicon Roundabout’ tag - originally coined by Dopplr.com CTO Matt Biddulph on Twitter - that has been so lovingly adopted by the technology press in general.

    We’ve just finished filming over in Parliament for a new website called Parliament Revealed. A fantastic experience thanks to Michael Raftery from Hansard Society and a superb crew - Steve, Chris, Dan and Matt.

    The shoot took place over a frantic three days where we managed to squeeze in 17 interviews and nearly as many different locations around Parliament and Portcullis House.

    More security checks that you’d like to experience in a year was offset against some truly fascinating interviews with John Bercow MP, Lord Norton, Tessa Jowell MP, Robert Rogers, Lord Tyler and Baroness Scotland amongst many others.

    The website should be finished by the end of this year / beginning of 2012 so watch this space for more details.

    uScreen: accessible film-making

    When ScreenSouth approached us a couple of years back their vision was to create a YouTube for young disabled people (on a budget). We took the challenge, together with Gamelab, of designing and developing a website that balances collaboration and sharing with safety and accessibility.

    We engaged with young people with learning or physical disabilities to understand how they use the Web, which we discovered doesn’t differ much from how “the rest of us” does. In fact, we scrapped a lot of assumptions and misconceptions, to learn that most importantly we had to keep webpages focused and content concise (avoiding distractions), and enable young people to customize their experiences (for instance, by making every sections of a page collapsible).

    The result is a widgetized interface and a user experience that revolves around collaboration: people are encouraged to create projects and invite other members of the community to work together. uScreen is a starting point for them to learn about the film-making process, be inspired, find like-minded people near them and kick off their own projects. Within a project, they can create storyboards for others to understand their vision, and once a film is in the can or mobile, they can put it together in the Cutting Room and allow other uScreen members to join them in the process.

    uScreen is built with the ExpressionEngine (EE) content management system, and it pushes its capabilities by adding a range of extensions such as Solspace Friends and Brandnewbox Followers, that enable social networking. We made tweaks to the Solspace Friends module and created our own extension, which lets users delete entries and comments without accessing the admin control panel. We have also built an API that enables the Flash tools built by Gamelab to read and write data onto the EE database.

    RTL stands for right-to-left and is a required feature of any multi-lingual website that is served in RTL languages such as Hebrew, Arabic, Urdu or Pashto.
    RTL-enabled websites allow their readers to switch between between LTR and RTL languages, by flipping the content layouts and ordering.

    I’m currently exploring the intricacies of LTR versus RTL layouts, building on a Less Framework CSS grid.

    It all starts with the creation of two body classes, body.ltr and body.rtl
    body.rtl { direction: rtl; }
    and continues with a set of increasingly mind-bending classes,
    like body.rtl .left { float:right; }
    or body.rtl .right { float:left; }
    which will make you very confused at the end of the day.
